The foundation stone of this great school formerly called St. Mary Dedication Education Centre as it were with motto: “Education for Light through Knowledge” was laid on January 7th in 1996. In the ancient city of Benin in Edo State, by a foresighted woman, Dr. (Mrs) Marian Egbe Asakome. She doubles as the President and Founder of this great school. The school was officially commissioned by His Excellency Admiral Mike Akhigbe, Former Vice President of Nigeria in the year 1996. The inauguration of the school was coupled with the establishment of the nursery and primary schools, which are based on the Montessori education. The school started its lessons on that day (January 7th) with fifteen, of which six were pupils. The number of pupils greatly increased over the years. In this present 2014/2015 academic year, the Montessori schools have a population of over a thousand students. The school ever since its opening has experienced tremendous growth and has attracted the attention of a vast variety of academic and non-academic organisations, nationally and internationally. As the school expanded, the demand and necessity arose for the creation of a secondary school. The high school which could be likened to a mustard seed, at its origin in 2001, was accredited by National Examination Council (NECO) and the West African Senior School Certificate (WASSC) in the months February and march, 2003, the examination rook place in the school with the registration of nineteen students for WASSCE and fifteen students for NECO. Furthermore, the school became famous for its participation in many competitions with other schools in Benin and beyond and carted home with many laurels. Among these are second position in 2003 Edo state French competition, first position in 2004, NYSC Quiz competition for secondary schools, second position in 2003 Inter- secondary school debate organized by Oredo local government council first position in the 2011 Edo State French competition and so on. We also have a track record of “trend setting” and being innovative in our styling and in the difference we bring to assessing our students academics. One cardinal variable that made the school famous is the inauguration of the student half-termly assessment report back in the year 2002. St. Mary’s as the school is fondly called, has made steady progress over the years. The quality of her products has earned her respect of many within and outside Nigeria. The smooth operation of the school under the leadership of the President/ Founder is waxing stronger. The success confidently led to the establishment of the Advanced Level program/department in the school on the 5th of May 2003. The curriculum was redesigned in a way that incorporates both the ordinary (“O”) level and advanced (“A”) level education. Lecture commenced in the Advance level programmes on the 9th of September 2003 with eleven students admitted for 2003/2004 academic years. As a result of the indomitable spirit of the President/Founder coupled with the crop of hardworking academic and non-academic staff, the school experienced population explosion in the year 2003. On Sunday, 26th September, 2004, a new chapter was opened in the history of Saint Mary Dedication British International School as the authorities commenced the running of the boarding house system, that is the school was approved and well equipped to run an educational and boarding facility. In 2004, the British Council accredited the school the licence to run the British curriculum, enabling A level students to write General Certificate Examination (GCE), IGCSE and the Cambridge examinations (permitted by Cambridge University). It was at this point the school changed its name from St. Mary Dedication Education Centre to St. Mary Dedication British International School. Following this, the British syllabus was also introduced to the high school. In meeting up with the name International School, the President/ Founder, Dr. (Mrs) Marian .E. Asakome has made rapid strides by planning and organising a benefiting excursion for the students and accompanying staff of the school to Ghana, London, Canada and the United Arab Emirate (Dubai).
