We’ve always heard that SafeBoda is one of the best places to work at. So we thought, why not find out for ourselves by getting an insider view from a Safeboda employee hired through Fuzu? Our first insider is Moses Adams, SafeBoda’s Payments Supervisor who revealed to us why he loves working at SafeBoda and how his experience has been so far.

My name is Moses Adams, I’m a Supervisor in the Payments team at SafeBoda. My passion is using technology to transform the world. I like playing computer simulation games, watching movies and traveling.

My career journey at SafeBoda began in May 2018 when I was actively looking for a job opportunity and I applied through Fuzu for the position of an IT assistant.

This was my foundation, and ever since then, I have developed a passion for financial technology/payments.

I joined the payments department in June 2019 as a Fintech Relationship Manager and my role was managing a team of 20 independent contractors/interns whose job was to serve Safeboda customers fuel at the different partner Shell stations in Kampala and also reconciling all fuel sales daily.

After 3 months I was promoted into a new role as a Senior Payments Associate where my responsibilities have been focusing on building and managing the agent network who perform cash-in and cash-out transactions for our community of customers at SafeBoda. I also run growth experiments on new payments features and lead a team that supervises, reconciles, and monitors transactions performed by our network of agents, etc.

One thing I love about Safeboda’s workplace culture is the unique way things are done. We have the freedom to party, celebrate every milestone, organize company getaways or activities like masterclasses that promote and motivate employees to learn new skills.

The company culture is one that many young Ugandan professionals would wish to be a part of, a place where you would most likely see folks that enjoy the weekdays more than they do weekends. I enjoy working at Safeboda because of the culture. We share in our values and beliefs.

One of my highlights while working at SafeBoda was when I was reporting and working closely with the Co-founder of the company - Maxime Dieudonné, as my interim manager. It was a learning experience for me and a step in my career journey.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and disrupted how we used to work, SafeBoda trained and equipped us to be able to work remotely. We were provided with the necessary resources like Airtime, Internet, MiFi and setting up weekly fun activities online to keep the team motivated and engaged. We were also encouraged to check on our team members via calls and SMS to make sure they are okay during the 4 month period of lockdown.

I was successfully hired through Fuzu and would like to share these few guidelines that I followed while writing my Cover letter and CV:

1. Keep your cover letter brief and make sure it emphasizes your suitability for the job. It can be broken down into the following sections:

First paragraph - The opening statement should spell out why you're writing the letter. Begin by stating the position you're applying for, where you saw it advertised and when you are available to start.

Second paragraph - Highlight relevant experience and demonstrate how your skills match the specific requirements of the job description. Summarise any additional strengths and explain how these could benefit the company.

Third paragraph - Cover why you're suitable for the job, what attracted you to this type of work, why you're interested in working for the company and what you can offer the organisation. This is a good opportunity to show off your knowledge of the company.

Last paragraph - Use the closing paragraph to round up your letter. Reiterate your interest in the role and indicate your desire for a personal interview. Now is the time to mention any unavailable dates. Once finished, read through the document and cut out any unnecessary words and sentences. Don't fill up space by repeating what's already covered in your CV.

2. What to include in a CV

Contact details - Include your full name, home address, mobile number and email address.

Education - List and date all previous education and professional qualifications.

Work experience - List your work experience in reverse date order, making sure that anything you mention is relevant to the job you're applying for. Include your job title, the name of the company, how long you were with the organization and key responsibilities.

Skills and achievements - The key skills that you list should be relevant to the job. Don't exaggerate your abilities, as you'll need to back up your claims at the interview.

Interests - Examples include writing your own blog or community newsletters if you want to be a journalist, etc.

References - You don't need to provide the names of referees at this stage. You can say 'references available upon request' but most employers would assume this to be the case so if you're stuck for space you can leave this out
