It does three things:

Banks, NGOs, telcos and international companies are among the employers most likely to use one. Smaller businesses often screen by hand. Either way, an ATS-friendly CV is also easy for a busy human to read, so you lose nothing.
Why Your CV Format Is Failing
Most rejections at this stage have nothing to do with how good you are. The software simply couldn’t read the page.
Common problems:
- Two columns. The software reads across both, mixing your skills into your job history.
- Tables and text boxes. Content inside them is often skipped.
- Headers and footers. Contact details placed there can vanish.
- Icons, skill bars and star ratings. Software can’t read “4 out of 5 stars in Excel”.
- Scanned PDFs or images. A picture of text has no text in it.

Keep:
- One column, top to bottom
- Standard headings: Profile, Work Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications
- Name, phone, email and town in the main body
- Consistent dates, such as “Jan 2023 – Mar 2025”
- Bullets that start with action verbs
- The file type the ad asks for, or a text-based PDF if it doesn’t say
Delete:
- Your photo, unless requested
- Date of birth, ID number, marital status and religion
- Skill bars, charts, logos and icons
- Hobbies unrelated to the job
- “References available on request”
- Anything past two pages, unless you’re very senior
Removing your ID number also protects you. Your CV can land in many inboxes, and you don’t control where it goes next.
