How do you know if you are experiencing job burnout?

Are you physically, mentally, or emotionally exhausted at work? You are going through a job stress called job burnout. How do you know if you are experiencing job burnout?

According to the Mayo Clinic, you should ask yourself these questions:

  • Have you become cynical or critical at work?

  • Do you drag yourself to work and have trouble getting started once you arrive?

  • Have you become irritable or impatient with co-workers, customers or clients?

  • Do you lack the energy to be consistently productive?

  • Do you lack satisfaction from your achievements?

  • Do you feel disillusioned about your job?

  • Are you using food, drugs or alcohol to feel better or to simply not feel?

  • Have your sleep habits or appetite changed?

  • Are you troubled by unexplained headaches, backaches or other physical complaints?

You are going through job burnout if you relate to any of the questions above.

It may be caused by exhaustion, an indifference towards your job and the tendency to look at you work in a negative light convincing yourself that nothing you do is up to par. Burnout should not be taken lightly as it can affect your health; it can cause mental and physical problems.

Once you have identified the causes of your burnout, you can address the issues by discussing it with your supervisor. Do you need support from your team members so that your work load is easier to handle? Do you need a few days off to recuperate? Physical activity can also help you deal with the stress. Consider ways in which to alleviate the stress that is contributed to burnout.
