According to Christine Wright, Senior Vice President, Hays US, there are major differences between starting a new remote job as compared to starting a new office job. These major differences include things like;
-
Lack of interpersonal interactions with colleagues and managers
-
Adapting to new technology and new ways of working without the help of a coworker being immediately available
-
It gets difficult to get a grip on the company's culture
The following tips will help you adjust accordingly to a new remote job:
Prepare mentally that you will be working remotely
Begin by accepting the prospects of working remotely. This means change, and however small change is, it has the capability of taking you from your comfort zone. Working remotely as part of change provides an opportunity for learning. Start by embracing it, do not fight it.
Set up a new space
Dan Black, a global recruiting leader at the consulting firm EY, insists that setting up a new space serves as a pivot in the transition of starting a new remote job. It not only prepares you mentally but also creates a space that you can refer to as an office. Thereby, this serves as a first step in creating the boundary between your social life and work.
Set communication standards
In a remote work setting, the only way to network with your colleagues is by learning how to communicate with one another digitally. Therefore, as early as possible you should initiate contact to verify which communication method is most convenient. Also, share your communication preferences so as to come to a consensus on which mode of communication should be used.
Master the company's technology and tools
Every company has different technology and tools at its disposal. These technologies and tools assist in having an effective workflow system. While working remotely, it is important to master these technologies and tools for there will not be a colleague to assist you when you start working. Mastering the tools beforehand saves time that otherwise would be used to teach you. In addition, once you have mastered them, there are high chances that you will be productive in meeting deadlines.
Create social connections with coworkers
Working remotely isolates you from your colleagues. Being at the office would have enabled you to socialize during tea breaks and lunch hours. More than that, it may render communication between colleagues nonfunctional.
On the contrary, you should make use of the company's communication technology/software to interact with your teammates, even if it is not work-related.
Maintain your social life outside work
With working remotely, it may be difficult to set work-life boundaries. Failure to distinguish between work and home may result in unhealthy bad habits such as overworking.
A study found that remote workers have been feeling the pressure to perform since the start of the pandemic, causing them to work longer hours.
To mitigate this, you should establish strict schedules for yourself. After work, make the habit of meeting up with friends, family or colleagues to talk about anything but work.
