The Royal Danish Embassy in Nairobi represents Denmark in Kenya, Seychelles, Eritrea, Mauritius and Malawi as well as the United Nations in Nairobi. It manages development and stabilization cooperation linked to Kenya and follows political and economic developments. Climate change, green growth, democracy, human rights, equitable healthcare, women’s rights and empowerments are some of our key areas of focus across the Kenya Strategic Cooperation framework for the period 2021-25, as is the enhancing of trade between Denmark and Kenya and support to regional cooperation in East Africa and consular/visa services.

The Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) programme was initiated by Denmark in 2015 and today it is operational in growth countries around the globe with country specific sector focus. Focus areas takes a point of departure in Danish public and private strongholds, highly demanded by recipient countries.

In Kenya, SSC Food and SSC Energy has been running for several years. SSC Maritime is a new sector initiative.

The overall objectives for the SSC programmes are:

  • To contribute to inclusive, sustainable growth and development

  • To strengthen and expand relations between Denmark and Kenya

  • To engage Danish and Kenyan private sector in delivering solutions to the SDG and climate challenges

  • SSC fosters strong public sector cooperation between Denmark and Kenya and we are directly involved in capacity building of competent authorities and other sector players.

The Embassy is recruiting a Programme Officer to assist the implementation of the Strategic Sector Cooperation programme in the maritime, food and energy areas. Employment is on a local contract and based on the Staff Rules of the mission.

The Programme Officer will report to:

The Programme Officer will report to:

Sector Counsellors – Strategic Sector Cooperation programmes in the maritime, food and energy areas.


  • Collaboration and interaction with central and regional public authorities governing the areas of food, energy and the maritime sector following SSC project work plans

  • Analyse market related and political sector issues

  • Disseminate and communicate programme results and developments to media and networks

  • Compile experience from SSC trainings in Denmark and follow up on action plans

  • Arrange meetings, seminars, workshops, delegations and study tours

  • General project administration

Qualifications: The applicant must have:
  • A relevant university degree at Master level or equivalent

  • Minimum of 3 years professional working experience in the field of government regulation and compliance and public-private interaction in Kenya

  • Preferably, basic knowledge about the maritime, agricultural/food and energy sub-sector

  • Analytical and practical approach to problem solving, possibly demonstrated through years of work in the consultancy sector.

  • Deep knowledge of Kenya’s political and administrative processes.

  • Experience with programme formulation and programme cycles.

  • Excellent English oral and written skills are a requirement.

  • Experience with writing analytical briefs and policy notes

  • A team player and be able to work independently, often with short deadlines.

  • Good at managing relationships

  • Able to restructure at short notice and thrive in an unpredictable environment

  • Good strategic intuition and tactical insights

  • Ability to ensure smooth handling of practical planning and the implementation of planning from bookings and travel plans to programme follow up and mission briefs.

  • Conscious about follow up, tracking progress and a good communicator
