Responsibilities

Protection Monitoring & Case Identification

  • Identify, monitor, verify, and safely document human rights violations and protection risks affecting LGBTQI+ refugees and asylum seekers within the community.
  • Conduct confidential, survivor-centered community monitoring, with heightened attention to risks such as discrimination, violence, eviction, arrest, harassment, and exclusion from services.
  • Conduct regular community visits and safe check-ins with LGBTQI+ refugees, using trust-based and culturally sensitive approaches.
  • Follow up on emergency protection concerns faced by LGBTQI+ refugees and escalating cases promptly to Protection Officers/Associates.

Data Collection & Reporting

  • Collect protection data using standardized tools and KOBO, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and ethical data handling.
  • Analyze and report emerging trends, protection gaps, and community needs affecting LGBTQI+ persons.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports highlighting activities conducted, cases identified, referrals made, and progress against targets.

Case Referral & Support

  • Refer individuals with protection concerns to Protection, Legal, GBV, Health, Mental Health, and Livelihood services, as appropriate.
  • Work closely with the Gender and GBV teams to support legal advice, counselling, and follow-up for LGBTQI+ clients at HIAS Huduma Mtaani Clinics on legal issues.
  • Support immediate, emergency assistance for LGBTQI+ refugees at heightened risk, including emergency shelter placement and safety planning, in coordination with supervisors.

Community Engagement & Awareness

  • Support community awareness sessions on refugee rights, protection mechanisms, legal documentation, and access to services, with content adapted for LGBTQI+ refugees.
  • Assist in mobilizing LGBTQI+ community members for forums, sensitization campaigns, and safe dialogue spaces.
  • Build and maintain trusting relationships with LGBTQI+ community members, peer leaders, local authorities, and service providers, while prioritizing safety and confidentiality.

Coordination & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Support the mapping of protection, GBV, and specialized services relevant to LGBTQI+ refugees.
  • Collaborate with local authorities and partners to identify LGBTQI+ individuals at heightened risk and facilitate referrals for specialized support.
  • Participate in coordination meetings, trainings, and supervision sessions as required.

Translation & Community Facilitation

  • Provide language interpretation and cultural mediation during community activities, clinics, and outreach as needed.

Capacity Building

Under the guidance of the Gender & GBV Officer and protection team, support training of beneficiary groups on:

  • Refugee and asylum seeker rights
  • LGBTQI+-specific protection risks
  • Legal documentation and access to justice
  • Safety, reporting mechanisms, and referral pathways
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and other required gatherings, while maintaining ongoing supervision and personal development.
