We're all looking for that job that will finally get us out of unemployment but maybe it's time to shift that focus into building a career
When it comes to job searching, a lot of us tend to have tunnel vision. Basically, we focus only on the end goal which is get the job, get paid and so life continues. This approach to the job search though more often than not leads to burn out and ending up in the wrong career. This doesn't mean that the things going on are not important because they truly are. It means you need to find an approach that is more sustainable. This is why you should focus on building a career and not getting a job. But what does this mean?
Better career choices
When you focus on just getting a job, you're likely to end up in a situation where you accept the first offer that comes your way. However, when you focus on building a career, you're able to be more thoughtful about the types of roles that you can get into. Now granted this is usually something that takes sometime to figure out but through things like personality tests, career coaching and building your skills, you're able to get a clearer picture of what it is you truly want.
Investing in yourself
The best thing we can do for ourselves especially in the times between jobs is invest in ourselves. I can hear you saying, "But I don't have money. How am I supposed to do that!?" Investing in yourself can be done in a lot of different ways. You might not be able to go back to school but there are a lot of free courses you can take that will teach you something new. It could also be building your networks by attending free networking events to meet people you can learn from. There are many different ways to invest in yourself - you just have to be creative!
So remember the next time you're thinking about getting a job to remember about the long term vision that is building your career.
