UNEP’s Ecosystem Division drives conservation, restoration and sustainable use of ecosystems to achieve benefits for nature and people: today and future generations. The division works with Member States and partners to strengthen resilience by providing policy and technical support to catalyze sustainable social and economic transformation for biodiversity, people and peace.

The position is located in the Nature Frameworks Support Unit (NFSU), Biodiversity & Land Branch, Ecosystems Division, Nairobi duty station. Under the direct supervision of the Head of NFSU, the incumbent will perform the following duties:

Responsibilities

  • Support the coordination of Global Environment Facility (GEF) Biodiversity Enabling Activities (e.g. NBSAP(National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan) updates, National Reports to UNCBD (United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity) and its protocols, UNCCD (United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification) reporting processes), ensuring alignment with UNEP-wide priorities and guidance provided by senior management.
  • Facilitate the coordination of UNEP projects funded by the Kunming Biodiversity Fund, ensuring compliance with UNEP rules and procedures and contributing to delivery of the Medium-Term Strategy.
  • Provide technical and analytical support for the implementation of relevant United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) resolutions under the Nature Frameworks Support Unit.
  • Monitor and analyze programme/project development and implementation; identify operational issues; propose solutions; and support follow-up actions related to Multilateral Environmental Agreements (UNCBD, UNCCD, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).
  • Manage and supervise staff and personnel involved in these activities.
  • Support engagement with Member States and partners through preparation and facilitation of technical workshops and consultations on Multilateral Environmental Agreements.
  • Contribute to inter-agency coordination processes and working groups, providing inputs and follow-up support as required.
  • Participate in field missions and provide technical and logistical support, including coordination with consultants and preparation of mission outputs.
  • Support budget and project management processes, including preparation of work programmes, progress reports, and financial documentation.
  • Prepare briefings, speeches, and technical inputs for senior management on Multilateral Environmental Agreements and related processes.
  • Support knowledge management and information sharing across projects and partners.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in biodiversity conservation, environmental science, sustainable development, or a related field.
  • A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
  • Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.

Work Experience

  • A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management in biodiversity conservation, including international contexts, is required.
  • Experience managing or coordinating diverse teams to deliver results in biodiversity is required.
  • Experience working with Regional or Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) is desirable.
  • Experience collaborating across multiple international organisations and/or UN agencies, is desirable
  • Demonstrable knowledge of GEF processes is desirable.
  • Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this job opening, English is required.
