LEGAL COUNSEL (1 Position) Job Grade 6 Job REF: VA/1/10/2025

The Legal Counsel is responsible for providing legal advisory, representation, and transactional support to the Corporation. The role holder ensures that legal risks are managed effectively by drafting and reviewing contracts, preparing legal opinions, handling litigation, and advising on negotiations.

In addition, the position supports the Corporation’s strategic and operational goals by maintaining proper legal records, engaging stakeholders, and contributing to policy development, while upholding compliance with statutory and constitutional requirements

Duties and responsibilities at this level will entail assisting in:-

1. Rendering professional legal advice to the management for any legal action to be initiated and/or defending the interests of the Corporation;
   

2. Preparing legal briefs for the initiation of legal action;
   

3. Preparing and interpreting legal opinions and offering guidance on legal requirements;
   

4. Supervising training of Legal Assistants, interns and other staff when necessary;
   

5. Maintaining and ensuring proper management of the records of the legal department are up to date and produce quarterly reports on the same;
   

6. Assisting to prosecute for and represent the Corporation in the court of law and quasi-judicial tribunals;
   

7. Preparing and filing of pleadings for and on behalf of the Corporation;
   

8. Drafting and reviewing of legal instruments and policy documents on behalf of the Corporation;
   

9. Advising on negotiations and taking part in commercial transactions;
   

10. Drafting of contracts and MOUs;
    

11. Engaging and liaising with stakeholders on behalf of the Corporation; and
    

12. Legal research and assignments.
    

Academic and professional Qualification Requirements

1. Bachelor’s Degree in Law from a recognized institution;
   
2. Postgraduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law;
   
3. Admitted as an Advocate of the High Court;
   
4. Hold a valid practicing certificate;
   
5. Member of the Law Society of Kenya;
   
6. Proficiency in computer applications; and
   
7. Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution.
