The Climate-sensitive Agriculture and Pastoralism in Northern Kenya (CLAP) project, implemented by GIZ and funded by BMZ and the EU, supports communities in Turkana, Marsabit and Baringo to build resilience to climate change through sustainable natural resource management, climate adaptation and improved livelihoods.
Based in Lodwar, the Value Chain Advisor will lead project activities in Turkana County, focusing on climate-resilient income opportunities, value chain development and private sector engagement. The role will also collaborate with teams in Marsabit and Baringo to identify cross-county synergies, joint value chain opportunities and resource mobilisation.
Specifically, the Value Chain Advisor will be responsible for:
- Mapping, assessing and developing the most promising climate-resilient value chains in Turkana County — including in the livestock, agriculture and fisheries sectors — and facilitating stakeholder collaboration with a view to mobilising additional public and private resources
- Identifying, engaging and building partnerships with private sector actors — including
traders, aggregators, processors, input suppliers and financial service providers — and initiating upgrading measures along priority value chains in Turkana and beyond - Overseeing the planning and implementation of project activities in Turkana County, creating synergies within the project across counties and with other initiatives and players operating in the ASAL areas
- Initiating and facilitating capacity development measures for value chain actors and target groups, including stakeholder workshops, trainings, capacity building for partners and multipliers, and business-to-business facilitation
- Elaborating work packages — including administrative and financial requirements — for
implementation by consultants or local partners, and overseeing and monitoring their execution and impact - Initiating and performing administrative tasks in accordance with GIZ rules and regulations, including procurement of goods and services and compliance with GIZ security standards
- Supporting monitoring and evaluation of project activities, documenting results and impact, and contributing to knowledge and communication products as well as project visibility
- Mainstreaming cross-cutting issues — including gender and youth, and digital transformation — into project planning and implementation, and contributing to agriculture cluster development
- Where appropriate and reasonable, the position holder is willing to perform tasks outside the scope of this job description as required by the project manager or the Cluster Coordinator for Agriculture and Rural Development, and to contribute to the overall portfolio development of the cluster.
Qualifications and Specialist Knowledge
- Master’s degree in Agriculture, Livestock Development, Agricultural Economics or a related field, with a focus on agri-food value chain development, including livestock, pastoralism and/or agriculture.
At least 10 years of professional experience in value chain development, income generation and market systems, covering production, value addition and market access in ASAL or comparable contexts.
Minimum 5 years’ experience working directly with medium- and large-scale private sector actorsin the crop and/or livestock sector, including partnership development, investment facilitation and business model development benefiting smallholder and pastoral communities.
- Experience with an international development organisation and/or established private sector organisation, including at least 3 years working outside Nairobi, preferably in a northern ASAL area. Turkana County experience is a strong advantage.
Strong managerial, organisational and coordination skills, with the ability to manage complex tasks, deadlines and competing priorities.
Proven ability to engage and build relationships with senior and mid-level stakeholdersacross the private sector, government and civil society to support an enabling environment for value chain development.
Strong teamwork, interpersonal and self-management skills, with the ability to work independently and quickly acquire new knowledge.
Fluency in English and Swahili, with excellent written English and strong ICT skills, including MS Office and MS Teams. Knowledge of local languages is an advantage.
