• Registered Nurse / Midwife, with current registration for practice from the Uganda Nurses and Midwives councils (UNMC), who is interested and ready to work in a busy labour ward with minimum supervision. The candidate is required to have worked for at least three (3) years in a busy health centre/institution. Experience in provision of HCT/ART/PMTCT services is preferred. Experience in counselling and research with human participants will be an added advantage.
• The candidate should have comprehensive knowledge of PMTCT, ART and newborn examination. They should be willing and able to work extended duty shifts i.e. 12 hour day, and 12 hour night shifts, including public holidays and weekends and be able to accomplish assigned tasks accurately with detailed completeness. The candidate should also possess good oral communication skills and be able to work in a team. Flexibility to adjustment in work schedule is required. Ability to use a computer / tablet to collect data is essential.

The holder of this position will work under the direct supervision of the Nurse Coordinator with functional responsibilities to the Hospital Liaison Coordinator and will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
• Examining all births in the hospital to ascertain the presence or absence of major external birth defects.
• Counselling mothers of newborns with birth defects and linking them to special care.
• Obtaining consent and enrolling participants in the case control study.
• Interviewing mothers and reviewing their medical records to collect surveillance and study related data .and completing the surveillance forms using Android-based tablets.
• Ensuring participants’ confidentiality and privacy, including safety of data collection equipment like tablets and laptops.
• Participating in study data quality assurance and control.
• Working together with the participating hospital staff midwives to prepare expectant mothers for delivery and conducting of deliveries.
• Request, receive and account for study supplies on wards/units.
• Conduct other study specific procedures as shall be specified from time to time.
