Description
The role holder will lead the end-to-end logistics operations to ensure seamless coordination of clearing and forwarding activities at the Port of Mombasa while simultaneously managing a dedicated fleet of 65 vehicles. with primary mission is to minimize port dwell time, eliminate demurrage charges, and maximize fleet utilization through proactive leadership and technical expertise in Kenyan customs and transport regulations.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field. A Diploma in Clearing & Forwarding or a valid Customs Practitioner’s Certificate is a distinct advantage.
3 to 8 years of progressive experience in logistics, with at least 3 years in a managerial or supervisory capacity.
Proven track record in Mombasa Port clearance and handling diverse cargo types (Containerized, Bulk, or Project Cargo).
Direct experience managing a fleet of at least 40+ heavy commercial vehicles.
Proficient in KRA iCMS/Simba/Kentrade, fleet management software, and MS Excel for data-driven reporting.
Technical skills
In-depth knowledge of Incoterms 2020 and East African Community Customs Management Act (EACCMA).
Expertise in Route Planning and heavy-vehicle maintenance cycles.
Strong negotiation skills for dealing with vendors, shipping lines, and subcontractors.
Ability to troubleshoot mechanical fleet issues and port documentation bottlenecks under high pressure.
Responsibilities
1. Port Operations & Customs Clearance
Oversee the entire Clearing & Forwarding (C&F) process for imports and exports through the Port of Mombasa and CFS (Container Freight Stations).
Ensure 100% compliance with KRA (Kenya Revenue Authority), KPA (Kenya Ports Authority), and KEBS (Kenya Bureau of Standards) regulations.
Manage relationships with shipping lines and port officials to expedite cargo release and resolve disputes or "holds" dynamically.
Coordinate the preparation and filing of all customs documentation to ensure zero penalties and zero demurrage.
2. Fleet & Transport Management
Directly manage a fleet of 65 vehicles, ensuring 24/7 operational readiness and optimal dispatch scheduling.
Monitor vehicle tracking systems (GPS/Telematics) to ensure route adherence, fuel efficiency, and driver safety.
Implement a rigorous Preventive Maintenance Schedule to minimize vehicle downtime and mechanical failures during transit.
Optimize "Empty Miles" and turnaround times to ensure the fleet remains profitable and responsive to client needs.
3. Team Leadership & Driver Management
Supervise a large team including clearing agents, clerks, workshop technicians, and a pool of drivers.
Enforce strict discipline regarding driver conduct, transit times, and cargo safety.
Conduct regular training sessions on road safety, port protocols, and defensive driving.
4. Financial & Performance Accountability
Control operational costs including fuel, tolls, port charges, and maintenance repairs.
Track and report on key KPIs: Port Dwell Time, Cost Per Ton/Kilometer, Fuel Consumption, and On-Time Delivery Rate.
Conduct monthly stock/spares reconciliation and audit workshop expenses.
