About the DigitalTransformation Centre Kenya:




The DigitalTransformation Centre (DTC) Kenya is a project commissioned by the GermanFederal Ministry for Economic Development and Cooperation (BMZ) and the

European Union (EU). It was established to support the country’s digitaltransition towards a sustainable and human-centered digital economy andsociety. The DTC capitalizes on the existing digital and innovation ecosystemand seeks to strengthen it, while also looking at the wider societal impact ofdigital technologies. Through establishing of strategic partnerships across awide spectrum of public, private, and civil society actors, the DTC’sengagement encompasses several components and flagships, such as the GigEconomy Initiative.




About the Data Economy Projectand the Digital Investment Facility





The DataEconomy Project is part of the Global Programme Digital Transformation,commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development

(BMZ) and the European Union (EU), with the overall aim of improving theconditions for a value-generating data economy together with the digitalecosystem at all levels – macro, meso and micro level. Under this mandate, theData Economy Project is implementing the EU Action “Data Governance in Africa”,the first Team Europe approach on the topic of data economy, thus, being anofficial flagship-initiative under the EU Global Gateway Strategy to promote ahuman-centered approach to data economy and society. The initiative of 5 EUMember States - Belgium, France, Finland, Estonia, and Germany – is co-fundedby the European Commission and aims to strengthen data sovereignty of Africanpartner countries and foster local value creation from data. It supports theAfrican Union Commission, Regional Economic Communities, and their MemberStates in (1) Developing data policy frameworks, (2) developing data use casesto showcase the value of data and enable data to flow across borders, and (3)supporting the identification of investments in secure and green data infrastructurein Africa.



To fosterinvestments in green and secure infrastructures, GIZ established the DigitalInvestment Facility (DIF) covering Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in close

collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Finland and Finnish HAUSInstitute. The DIF supports the facilitation of investments in datainfrastructure (Data Centres and Internet-Exchange-Points), that areenvironmentally friendly (green) and in line with state-of-the-artcybersecurity, under the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+)and other funding sources from EU Member States. The DIF strives to achievethis by promoting enhanced and integrated partnerships between the public andprivate sector, as well as European Development Finance Institutions (EDFIs), witha focus on facilitating interactions between European and African actors inline with the EU’s Global Gateway Strategy. The resources of the facility willbe prioritized to regions that show the highest demand and capability todevelop feasible infrastructure projects and where also markets show sufficientdemand for sustaining the infrastructure. By this, the DIF will contribute tobridging the gap between European financing opportunities and African datainfrastructure markets.




A.      Position Overview:



The DigitalInvestment Facility is seeking a dedicated and motivated Intern to support theactivities of the facility, As an Intern, you will work closely with Digital

Infrastructure and Investment technical experts gaining valuable experience inthe development and implementation of digital transformation initiatives inEastern Africa.

B.      Tasks



The Internwill perform the following tasks under the disciplinary supervision of theDigital Economy Component Lead and in close collaboration with the Technical

Advisors.



Research Support:



  • Assist with researching existing resources, best practices, andregulations for green and secure data centers.


  • Contribute to the benchmarking process of existing data centers withinthe EAC region, analysing their level of green practices and security measures.


  • Support in gathering information on the existing digital infrastructurelandscape in the EAC region.


  • Support in stakeholder mapping and analysis.



  • Project Support:



    • Participate in consultations with stakeholders across the region tounderstand their needs and challenges regarding green data centers.


  • Support the development of draft green data center guidelines bycompiling research findings and contributing to content creation.


  • Assist with the preparation of workshop materials, includingpresentations and handouts, for stakeholder engagement on the draft guidelines.




  • Communication andFacilitation:




    • Assist with the organization and facilitation of workshops to gather feedbackon the draft green data center guidelines.


  • Support the facilitation of group discussions and brainstorming sessionsduring workshops to encourage active stakeholder participation.




  • Dissemination andDocumentation:



    • Contribute to the development of a dissemination strategy to raiseawareness about the finalized green data center guidelines.


  • Assist in the documentation of workshop outcomes, including capturingkey takeaways and action plans.




  • Logistics:



    • Provide logistical support forthe smooth running of workshops, ensuring all materials and arrangements are inorder.

    • Performother duties and tasks in the context of Digital Infrastructure as assigned




    B. Required qualifications, competencies, and experience



    TheIntern should have the following qualifications, competencies, and experiences:




    Qualifications


    • Bachelor’s or master’s degrees in technology, telecommunications, policy, Business, finance, international development
    • or equivalent.


    Professional experience


    • Candidate should show having undertaken prior initiative in student leadership, volunteering or any other activity that showcase
    • leadership skills.

     

    Other knowledge, additional competences


    • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Good research skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in both written and spoken English at a high level.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to cooperate effectively with colleagues and partners

  • Ability and willingness to work in a dynamic team under minimal supervision

  • Self-starter, who works independently and has a flexible attitude but is a strong team player simultaneously

  • Very good working knowledge of ICT technologies (related software, phone, email, internet), Excel and other computer
  • applications (e.g., MS Office)
