The Global Covenant of Mayors (GCoM) is the largest network of cities driving urban climate action. Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA), a chapter of the GCoM, is an initiative of cities and subnational governments taking action to address climate change and energy access. Started in 2015 CoM SSA is its African regional chapter that aims to support Sub-Saharan African cities to tackle the interconnected challenges of climate change and access to sustainable energy. In Kenya, the initiative is implemented through Deutsche
Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and Expertise France. In Kenya, GIZ focuses on climate change related projects and planning at the sub-national level. It promotes coordination actions between the national and sub national governments especially focusing on climate action and promoting energy access. Building on CoM SSA’s previous phases, since 2019 the focus of the programme is to move from planning to implementation and to expand the
focus to attract climate funding at the local level.

Theprogramme works through three pillars of action:

I. Sustainable Energy
Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP) Development

II. Support to development of bankable urban infrastructure projects

III. City to City/Regional partnerships

CoM SSA empowers its network of over 320 cities and subnational governments from
over 35 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa to take concrete action in overcoming the effects of climate change and improving access to sustainable energy.

In support of the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) in Kenya, the GIZ focuses on climate change related projects and planning at the sub-national level.

CoM SSA has supported the county government of Nakuru in the development of the
Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP) and currently exploring opportunities for solar PV projects. CoM SSA has collaborated with Embu County in the development of the Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan (ISWMP) and currently in discussion towards implementing a “Greening” project that will be participatory based in terms of solution identification. CoM SSA is also currently working with Mombasa County in the development of on Solar PV projects in municipal buildings (USE – Urban Smart Energy) and establishment of
a solution co-creation space -Urban Local Adaptation Booster (LAB)- that will be a multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder led process.

In pursuant of these project goals, the project is recruiting an intern to support its staff with the implementation of the ongoing and planned activities. The intern will work under direct supervision of the National Project Advisors with the support of the program manager seated in Brussels, Belgium.
