JOB DESCRIPTION - MENTOR
Job Title: Mentor Program: Entrepreneurship for improved food security, nutrition, and child well-being in Marsabit (SOIL Program) Reports to: Field Officer Duration: One Year Job titles of persons supervised: None Locations: Malabot and Olturot
1. Introduction
BOMA is a non-profit organization founded in 2006, with a vision to end extreme poverty in Africa’s drylands. We are driven by our mission to provide the people and governments of Africa Drylands with adapted economic inclusion programs that significantly reduce extreme poverty rates and enhance their ability to withstand multiple crises. This is achieved through the BOMA context-adaptive Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) graduation model designed to economically empower women, youth and refugees by equipping them with the skills, resources and linkages necessary to achieve sustainable livelihoods.
To date, BOMA has transformed the lives of over 1 million women, youth and refugees, focusing on last-mile communities most vulnerable to climate change and systemic shocks. By leveraging a tech-enabled, data-driven, and participant-centered approach, BOMA ensures measurable, scalable, and lasting impact.
2. Background
BOMA is recognized for developing an innovative, gender-focused poverty graduation model for the extreme-poor women in the ASALs, the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP). This long-term program offers a highly sequenced, layered and timebound set of interventions to support vulnerable households to develop financial literacy, establish and grow businesses, build savings, strengthen social capital, increase household income and develop resilience to shocks.
Where BOMA finds the high levels of chronic malnutrition, nutrition sensitive interventions are layered onto the REAP Model through REAP for Nutrition, addressing the drivers of food insecurity and persistent and acute malnutrition.
The SOIL program applies this approach in Marsabit County, focusing on entrepreneurship for food security, nutrition and child well-being, at the nexus of nutrition, natural resource management, regenerative resilience design and climate change. SOIL Cohort II builds on lessons from cohort 1 implementation and places greater emphasis on enterprise growth and diversification, access to markets and financial services, private sector engagement, household food security, practical nutrition interventions, regenerative designs, locally appropriate livelihoods opportunities and sustainable community capacity.
Requirements
5. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIRED COMPETENCIES
• At least a Diploma in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Agribusiness, Agriculture, Community Development, Nutrition, Community Health, Public Health, Social Work, Development Studies, Project Management or another relevant field.
• At least 2 years of relevant experience in community-based programme implementation, livelihoods, entrepreneurship, nutrition, agriculture, economic inclusion, financial inclusion or resilience programming.
• Demonstrated experience in community mobilization, participant mentorship, business coaching or savings group facilitation.
• Experience working with women, pastoralist communities or other vulnerable and rural populations is highly desirable.
• Experience using digital data collection tools and Microsoft Office is desirable.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills.
• Good coaching and facilitation skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
• Motivated, self-driven and accountable.
