Intern - Catalyzing Transformation towards Sustainable Livestock Systems (LiveSys)

About the project & context

Livestock production is vital to the livelihoods and food security of millions of people across Africa, particularly in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid areas. However, unsustainable livestock systems contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss.

Funded by BMZ, GIZ launched the global Catalyzing Transformation towards Sustainable Livestock Systems (LiveSys) programme in 2024 to support the transition towards sustainable, climate-resilient livestock systems.

LiveSys works with key global, regional and national stakeholders to strengthen financing and policy instruments that enable sustainable livestock transformation, in partnership with organisations including AU-IBAR, ILRI, CGIAR partners, the African Development Bank, World Bank and IFAD.

The global programme works in four fields of activity (outputs):

• Advocacy and agenda setting for a sustainable transformation of livestock systems,
  

  especially strengthened links between national and global agendas (e.g. Rio Conventions).
  

• Strengthening the capacities of African key actors in the implementation of regional and
  

  national sustainable livestock strategies.
  

• Promoting global knowledge exchange, networking and mutual learning, including South-South exchange with Latin America.
  

• Mobilization of financial resources through advice and technical support to key actors
  

  and removal of barriers to additional financing options for sustainable livestock systems (e.g. climate finance)
  

A. Responsibilities

The key responsibility of the Intern is to provide administrative, coordination, communication, and knowledge management support to the LiveSys project. This includes assisting with project activities, stakeholder engagement, capacity development, research, documentation, reporting, and maintaining relevant databases and information. The Intern will support effective information flow and collaboration among project partners while gaining practical experience in
sustainable livestock systems, climate policy, and international development cooperation.

B. Tasks

Under the guidance and support of the program director and policy advisor, the intern’s tasks include:

1. Desk research, documentation and reporting support

• Support the review and compilation of relevant project documents, reports, briefs, and other knowledge products.
  

• Assist in documenting project activities, lessons learned, good practices, and key outcomes.
  

• Assist in drafting briefing materials, presentations, stakeholder correspondence, and other project-related documentation.
  

2. Knowledge management and communication support

• Support the organization and maintenance of digital knowledge repositories and project databases.
  

• Assist in preparing communication materials, newsletters, event announcements, success stories, and project updates.
  

• Support filing, record management, and maintenance of project documentation in accordance with GIZ procedures.
  

3. Planning, coordination and logistical support for project activities

• Support the planning, coordination, and logistical organization of meetings, workshops, trainings, webinars, and stakeholder consultations.
  

• Support the preparation of presentations, briefing materials, and other materials required for meetings, workshops, and stakeholder engagements
  

4. Stakeholder engagement and project coordination support

• Assist in coordinating communication and follow-up with project partners, stakeholders, and participants.
  

• Support the preparation and dissemination of stakeholder invitations, correspondence, and activity information.
  

• Assist in tracking action points, deliverables, and follow-up activities arising from meetings, workshops, and consultations.
  

1. Required qualifications, competences, and experience.
   

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in communications, Business administration, Project Management, Development studies or Climate Change.
  

• Relevant academic exposure to sustainable livestock systems, climate change and adaptation, agricultural/livestock policy, sustainable development, natural resource management.
  

• Must have completed fourth year, awaiting graduation or a recent graduate within one year of completion
  

Skills and work experience

• Familiarity with sustainable agricultural, rural development, or agri-food systems policy issues is an asset.
  

• Proven affinity with social-media and experience in using them for strategic communication is an asset.
  

• Good desk research and analytical skills
  

• Great writing skills – organisation, flow, structure, clarity, articulate, and concise
  

• Critical & system thinking skills
  

• Attention to detail and a knack for finesse
  

• Knowledge of working with Microsoft office 365 applications.
  

• Good communication and presentation skills
  

• Self-driven with great team-work capabilities
  

• Diversity awareness and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment
  

• A self-motivated and analytical person with an inclination to understanding global and national trends and with ability to synthesize information and produce presentable results.
