Junior Technical Advisor - Catalyzing Transformation towards Sustainable Livestock Systems (LiveSys)

About the project & context

Livestock production is vital to the livelihoods and food security of millions of people across Africa, particularly in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid areas. However, unsustainable livestock systems contribute to greenhouse gas emissions, ecosystem degradation and biodiversity loss.

Funded by BMZ, GIZ launched the global Catalyzing Transformation towards Sustainable Livestock Systems (LiveSys) programme in 2024 to support the transition towards sustainable, climate-resilient livestock systems.

LiveSys works with key global, regional and national stakeholders to strengthen financing and policy instruments that enable sustainable livestock transformation, in partnership with organisations including AU-IBAR, ILRI, CGIAR partners, the African Development Bank, World Bank and IFAD.

The global programme works in four fields of activity (outputs):

• Advocacy and agenda setting for a sustainable transformation of livestock systems,
  especially strengthened links between national and global agendas (e.g. Rio Conventions).
• Strengthening the capacities of African key actors in the implementation of regional and
  national sustainable livestock strategies.
• Promoting global knowledge exchange, networking and mutual learning, including South-South exchange with Latin America.
• Mobilization of financial resources through advice and technical support to key actors
  and removal of barriers to additional financing options for sustainable livestock systems (e.g. climate finance)

A. Responsibilities

The Junior Technical Advisor will provide technical, coordination, organisational and administrative support to the LiveSys project. Working closely with the Technical Advisor and project team, the role will support:

• Planning, implementation, monitoring and reporting of project activities.
  
• Stakeholder engagement and capacity development.
  
• Knowledge management, communication and effective information flow among partners.
  
• Coordination and implementation of activities in line with GIZ standards and procedures.
  
• Activities related to sustainable livestock systems, climate policy and international development cooperation.
  

B. Tasks

Technical & Project Implementation

• Support activities on sustainable livestock systems, climate resilience, biodiversity, rangeland management, land restoration and climate policy.
  
• Research, analyse and synthesise technical information and contribute to concept notes, policy briefs, training materials and presentations.
  

Capacity Development & Knowledge Management

• Organise workshops, trainings, webinars, stakeholder consultations and learning events.
  
• Document project activities and support progress, donor and monitoring reports.
  
• Compile project results, indicators and supporting documentation.
  

Planning, Coordination & Administration

• Support activity planning, logistics, procurement, consultant and travel arrangements in line with GIZ procedures.
  
• Support budget preparation, expenditure tracking and activity monitoring.
  
• Track deliverables, action points and follow-up activities to ensure timely implementation.
  

Stakeholder Engagement

• Support collaboration with government institutions, AU-IBAR, research organisations, development partners, civil society and private sector stakeholders.
  
• Coordinate follow-up on actions and deliverables arising from meetings, workshops and consultations.
  

Required qualifications, competences, and experience.

• Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, Environmental Science, Development Studies, Climate Change, Natural Resource Management, Agricultural Economics or a related field.
  
• Relevant academic or professional exposure to sustainable livestock systems, climate change, agricultural policy, natural resource management or rural development.
  
• At least 3 years of relevant professional experience in livestock development, agriculture, climate change, natural resource management, rural development or related fields.
  

• Knowledge of agriculture, livestock, rural development or agri-food systems is an advantage.
  
• Strong stakeholder engagement, communication, report writing, documentation and project coordination skills.
  
• Experience supporting workshops, trainings, consultations and project activities.
  
• Excellent written and spoken English and Swahili.
  
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and virtual collaboration tools.
  
• Strong organisational, analytical and research skills, with excellent attention to detail.
  
• Ability to manage multiple tasks and work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary, multicultural teams.
  
• Strong intercultural awareness and communication skills.
  
• Demonstrated interest in sustainable livestock systems, climate change and agricultural development.
