Qualifications

MBBS or equivalent medical degree

Fellowship in Emergency Medicine (e.g., FCEM, FRCEM, or equivalent)

Valid medical licence to practise in Nigeria

Advanced Life Support (ALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certifications

Postgraduate qualifications in critical care or pre-hospital medicine

Certification in ultrasound-guided procedures

Experience

Minimum 5 years of post-specialisation experience in emergency medicine

Proven expertise in managing complex and high-acuity cases

Responsibilities
  1. Clinical Practice:
  • Provide advanced assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute medical and surgical emergencies.
  • Oversee the stabilisation and resuscitation of critically ill patients.
  • Perform emergency procedures, including intubation, central line placement, and chest tube insertion.
  • Ensure timely transfer or admission of patients requiring further specialised care.


  1. Leadership and Management:
  • Lead the emergency team during shifts, ensuring efficient patient care and workload distribution.
  • Develop and implement clinical pathways and protocols for emergency care.
  • Manage departmental operations, including resource allocation and staffing.
  • Participate in hospital-wide committees related to emergency services and patient safety.


  1. Education and Training:
  • Supervise and mentor junior doctors, medical students, and nursing staff.
  • Organise and deliver training sessions on emergency procedures and protocols.
  • Support staff development through regular appraisals and feedback.


  1. Quality Improvement and Governance:
  • Monitor and evaluate clinical outcomes to identify areas for improvement.
  • Participate in audits, incident reviews, and patient safety initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.


  1. Communication and Collaboration:
  • Actively participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.
  • Maintain effective communication with patients, families, and other healthcare providers.
  • Liaise with external agencies, including ambulance services and referral centres.


  1. Research and Development:
  • Promote and participate in research activities related to emergency medicine.
  • Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences.
