Description
The “Project - Climate-sensitive Agriculture and Pastoralism in Northern Kenya” is a new project that started its operation in March 2026.
The project supports rural communities as well as local public, private and civil society stakeholders in their efforts to increase the resilience of the rural population regarding climate and socio-economic challenges. Sustainable and productive management of natural resources and climate resilient income generation from livestock, agriculture and fisheries are main intervention
areas. While for Turkana and Marsabit there will be a o the focus will be on the better management of the Lake Baringo catchment area. The project will be implemented in the counties of Turkana, Marsabit and Baringo.
To make the project a success GIZ is looking for a highly motivated team to support the various interventions.
Responsibilities
In your role you safely and responsibly perform all official journeys using company vehicles and carry out technical, manual and other jobs related to the routine maintenance and care of these vehicles.
You ensure that all tasks assigned to you are carried out smoothly and on time.
You are responsible for keeping the required logbooks and data for your work area and carry out any related administrative tasks.
You systematically document the information related to your work area and use this data to update on a daily basis knowledge of road conditions, current routes and locations, and share this information with other drivers and GIZ staff, the names of whom you will be provided with for this purpose.
You perform your assigned tasks correctly and on schedule with due regard for the targets and conditions stipulated by your line manager.
You perform the tasks assigned to you by your line manager, where required.
Main Activities
- Drive staff/partners/guests/consultants in programme/agency vehicles and see to the follow up of rules in case of driving non-GIZ personnel.
Deal with delivery of correspondence, documents and goods to the premises of programme partners, other organizations, service providers or event venues.
Ensure the orderly operation and cleanliness of project/agency vehicles including safety of cars when parking.
Keep the project’s logbook according to the regulations of the company and prepare the mileage charges for private and/or other projects.
Manage necessary maintenance of project vehicles.
Support the preparation, transfer, assembly and dismantling of materials and equipment for different programme workshops and/or meetings, including for field events.
Purchase small items using petty cash and provide support in obtaining bids for procurements.
Support office activities and event management where applicable (e.g. selected administrative task such as keeping attendance sheets, support minutes)
Where appropriate and reasonable, the position holder is willing to perform tasks outside the scope of the job description
Qualifications & Specialist Knowledge
Minimum of recognized secondary school leaving qualification
Valid driving license and ability to pass driving test (visual and practical)
Driving Experience & Competencies
Minimum of 15 years of driving experience, including at least 10 years with a development organization or private sector organization
Proven experience with remote, off-road, and long-distance driving in rural and underserved areas
Defensive driving skills, preferably with proof of a defensive driving course not older than 5 years
Experience driving in areas with elevated security risks and awareness of appropriate conduct in such situations
Basic knowledge of general mechanics
Regional Knowledge & Rural Environment
Strong familiarity with rural environments, including appropriate conduct and communication with rural and pastoral communities
Local knowledge of and prior working experience in Baringo County and surrounding ASAL regions is a strong asset
Excellent command of spoken and written English and Kiswahili; knowledge of local languages spoken in the duty station is an advantage
Soft Skills & General
Good communication and interpersonal skills; team player
Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain confidentiality
Basic knowledge of MS Office and proficiency as an internet user to support general project office duties
