Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher).
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation. As well as: -
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications.
  • Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Field of study: statistics, sociology, environmental economics, environmental assessments, environmental monitoring, data science or another related field is required.
  • 1 Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.
  • However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
  • 2 Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D.
  • Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme.


Responsibilities

This internship is located in the Data Analytics, Statistics and Intelligence Section (DASIS), Office of Science (OoS), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Intern reports to the Programme Management Officer (Statistician) of the Section. The daily duties of the Intern may include, but are not limited to:

  • Process and analyze available environmental data and statistics;
  • Support development and preparation of metadata for environmental indicators;
  • Support data collection on the SDG indicators under UNEP custodianship;
  • Review statistical publications;
  • Assist in statistical methodological research;
  • Organize and otherwise support meetings with partners within and outside UNEP;
  • Assist in the creation of project documentation repositories and the publication of materials on UNEP's official websites;
  • Assist in the development and dissemination of communication and outreach materials;
  • Undertake other tasks as required by the office and in accordance with the intern's background.
