GIZ- Strengthening Capacity of IGAD towards Drought Resilience in the Horn of Africa  (SCIDA III) - (2022-2026)


The project focuses on strengthening the resilience of local pastoral and agro-pastoral communities to natural disasters and environmental changes. The resilience measures to be implemented by the project will be based on the Transhumance Corridor Development Plan (TCDP) within the Karamoja Cluster.

The SCIDA III project is designed as follows:

Project Goal:

The capacities of the intergovernmental organization IGAD inn cross border disaster risk management have been strengthened at regional and local level.


Project Output 2:

Measures to strengthen the resilience of local pastoral and agro-pastoral communities to natural disasters have been tested based on the Transhumance Corridor Development Plan (TCDP) in the Karamoja Cluster.


Project Indicators:

1. 50,000 ha of pastureland in transhumance corridors between Kenya and Uganda are managed more sustainably based on a participatory pasture management plan drawn up under the leadership of IGAD.

2. Evidence-based, participatory scaling recommendations have been developed for 15 cross-border pilot actions (of which at least 8 are aimed at promoting women and young people).

3. In three meetings per year, a local, transnational steering committee developed action-oriented recommendations for the selection and M&E of cross -border individual measures for the implementation of the transhumance development plan.

A. Responsibilities
  • Safe and responsible performing all official travel using official vehicles

  • Regular servicing and looking after official vehicles

  • Taking account of all available information on road conditions, accessible routes
    and locations

  • Running official errands and assisting with other office work


B. The driver performs the following tasks:

1. Driving

  • Providing passenger transport in an official car for project staff, official visitors and guests

  • Running errands for the project, e.g. sending letters and messages, paying bills and buying smaller quantities of office supplies; helping with transporting goods and completes the vehicle log correctly and conscientiously in accordance with GIZ standards.

2. Service

  • Cleaning the interior and exterior of the vehicle(s) regularly

  • Checking oil, water, brakes and brake liquid, tyre pressure, battery levels and the entire vehicle, monthly or every 5,000 km (whichever is first), headlights, brakes, bodywork for dents etc.

  • Responsibility for the project vehicle documents and their good condition, keeping a vehicle log and recording monthly maintenance; calculates monthly petrol, oil and lubricant consumption and reports need for service and carries out minor repairs

  • Immediately reporting all involvement of the project or office vehicle in accidents, including minor accidents, damage, loss, or theft of vehicle fittings

3. Knowledge management

  • Using all available information (including current radio news on traffic conditions) to update daily knowledge of road conditions, current passable routes/ locations, as well as security conditions prior to field trips, and sharing this information with other people in the office and other drivers.

4. Other duties/additional tasks

  • Assisting other colleagues as needed in the project, programme or office.

C. Required qualifications, competences and experience
Qualifications

  • Completed a secondary school education will be an added advantage.

  • Holds a valid driver’s license.

  • Advanced and/or Defensive driving certificate will be an advantage.

  •  VHF Radio communication will be an advantage.


D. Professional experience

  • At least 5-8 years’ work experience as a driver.

  • No major accidents in the past 3 years.

  • First Aid & Emergency training.


Other knowledge, additional competences

  • good knowledge of the English and ng’aturkana language.

  • discipline, punctuality, resilience, patience; familiarity with all project areas.

  • appropriate appearance and attire, friendly manner with all passengers.

  • willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures
    are agreed with management.

E. Duration of Assignment

  • The duration of this contract is until 31/03/2026.

F. Duty location

  • The duty station will be Lodwar.
