Key Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Teaching and Clinical Instruction
    • Facilitate practical teaching sessions in the Nursing Skills Laboratory.
    • Demonstrate nursing procedures using standardized clinical protocols.
    • Supervise students during skills practice and simulation exercises.
    • Guide students in developing psychomotor, cognitive, and communication competencies.
    • Integrate classroom theory with clinical practice expectations.
    • Provide individualized coaching and remediation for students requiring additional support.
    • Promote patient-centered care principles and professional nursing ethics.
  1. Simulation and Skills Laboratory Management
    • Prepare laboratory environments for scheduled teaching sessions.
    • Ensure availability and proper functioning of mannequins, simulation equipment, and teaching aids.
    • Coordinate simulation scenarios aligned with course learning outcomes.
    • Maintain infection prevention and control standards within the lab.
    • Ensure safe handling, storage, and inventory control of equipment and consumables.
    • Participate in procurement planning for laboratory supplies and equipment.
  1. Student Supervision and Assessment
    • Assess students’ clinical competencies using approved evaluation tools.
    • Conduct Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).
    • Provide timely formative and summative feedback.
    • Maintain accurate student performance records.
    • Identify students at risk academically or clinically and initiate support interventions.
    • Participate in grading and moderation processes.
  1. Curriculum Implementation and Development
    • Contribute to development and review of clinical skills curricula.
    • Align laboratory instruction with regulatory requirements and competency frameworks.
    • Assist in updating clinical procedures based on current evidence-based practice.
    • Support integration of simulation pedagogy and innovative teaching methods.
  1. Clinical Placement Support
    • Liaise with clinical sites to ensure alignment between laboratory preparation and clinical expectations.
    • Prepare students for clinical placements through pre-clinical orientation.
    • Reinforce professional conduct, patient safety, and documentation standards.
    • Participate in clinical supervision when assigned.
  1. Research and Scholarship
    • Participate in teaching innovation and nursing education research.
    • Support evidence-based practice initiatives within the School of Nursing.
    • Engage in scholarly activities, conferences, and professional development.
    • Contribute to academic publications and presentations where applicable.
  1. Quality Assurance and Compliance
    • Ensure compliance with:
    • University academic policies
    • Nursing regulatory body standards
    • Patient safety and ethical guidelines
    • Participate in accreditation processes and academic audits.
    • Contribute to continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  1. Student Mentorship and Professional Development
    • Serve as a mentor and professional role model.
    • Support development of clinical professionalism and ethical practice.
    • Provide academic advising related to clinical competence.
    • Promote inter-professional collaboration skills.
  1. Administrative Responsibilities
    • Maintain laboratory schedules and utilization records.
    • Prepare teaching plans, lesson materials, and reports.
    • Attend departmental meetings and faculty activities.
    • Assist in orientation of new students and faculty.
    • Participate in university committees as assigned.


Scope of Work

The Clinical Instructor shall:

  • Deliver clinical skills instruction across undergraduate and/or postgraduate nursing programs.
  • Manage day-to-day operations of the Nursing Skills Laboratory.
  • Supervise student practice in simulated and real clinical environments.
  • Conduct student competency assessments and examinations.
  • Support curriculum delivery and academic quality assurance.
  • Ensure safe learning environments consistent with healthcare standards.
  • Collaborate with faculty, clinical partners, and regulatory bodies.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN or equivalent).
  • Registered Nurse with valid practicing license from relevant Nursing Regulatory Council.
  • Postgraduate qualification (Master’s degree in Nursing/Education/Clinical Specialty)
  • Certification or training in Clinical Instruction or Simulation Education is an added advantage.


Experience

  • Minimum 3 years clinical nursing experience.
  • Experience in clinical teaching, preceptorship, or student supervision preferred.
  • Experience using simulation or skills laboratory equipment desirable.
