Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and working closely with the leadership team, the Lead Country Director will be responsible for supporting country programs and ensuring they adhere to CorpsAfrica’s strategic plan, policies, and procedures. Country Directors and the Country Office Liaison report to the Lead Country Director, who is the primary conduit between Country Directors/country offices and the leadership team to ensure effective communications, collaboration, and problem-solving. CorpsAfrica has highly qualified Country Directors and values autonomy at the country level, so this position plays a coaching and mentoring role to new CDs and transitions to a thought partner and one who can assist in high-level problem-solving to more experienced CDs, as well as oversight, coordination, and accountability.

The Lead Country Director will have/develop robust knowledge of CorpsAfrica’s program and operations and will identify and share best practices across country programs with the Country Office Liaison. They will create forums for learning and problem-solving across country programs in collaboration with GSO units. The Lead Country Director will embody CorpsAfrica’s values and be an outstanding ambassador inside and outside of the organization. 


Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least ten years of increasingly responsible work experience, five in the NGO sector, including as a Country Director, with good knowledge of budget management, HR systems, program design and implementation, and representation. 
  • Outstanding participatory leadership skills and experience in coaching and mentoring. 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage up and down an organizational structure. 
  • Highly collaborative style and demonstrated ability to work across cultures.
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal, presentation, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Fluency in English is required, and French is highly desirable. 
  • A strong commitment to the mission of CorpsAfrica and a desire to support youth leadership and participatory community development.

  • Provide oversight and support to Country Directors in collaboration with the Global Support Office (HR, finance, operations, programs and training, fundraising, representation).
  • Lead the start-up of new country offices with the Country Office Liaison (COL) team, recruit new Country Directors, and ensure a high-quality onboarding process for new country leadership. 
  • Lead the performance management system for Country Directors and COL. 
  • Foster a culture of innovation and collaboration across country offices.
  • Ensure country offices are helping to deliver on CorpsAfrica’s strategic plan.
  • Identify potential obstacles and risks and engage the relevant staff to mitigate and solve the issues.  
  • Identify potential continent and regional development partners to support country office programs. 
  • Attend conferences and meetings on behalf of the organization.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.
