This early-career role focuses on sample preparation and preliminary soil analysis, ensuring that all samples are processed to a high standard before being sent to external laboratories for advanced analysis (e.g. DUMAS or spectroscopy). The position is critical for maintaining data integrity and ensuring smooth coordination between field teams and partner laboratories.
Responsibilities
Receive and log incoming soil samples from field teams, ensuring correct labeling and documentation
Verify sample integrity and flag any inconsistencies or issues upon arrival
Dry, sieve, and prepare soil samples according to standardized protocols
Grind and homogenize samples where required to ensure consistency for external analysis
Sub-sample and package soils for shipment to partner laboratories
Conduct preliminary soil analyses as required (e.g. bulk density preparation, moisture content, basic soil characterization)
Maintain organized storage of all samples, including short-term processing and longer-term archiving
Track samples through the full lifecycle, from collection to shipment and results receipt
Prepare, document, and coordinate shipments of samples to external laboratories
Maintain accurate digital records of all samples, including metadata, processing status, and lab results
Enter, clean, and verify data from both field teams and external laboratory reports
Support quality control by identifying inconsistencies in sample data or handling
Maintain cleanliness, organization, and basic upkeep of the laboratory space and equipment
Assist in improving lab workflows and sample tracking systems over time
Diploma or degree in soil science, agronomy, environmental science, laboratory science, or a related field
Experience working in a laboratory or handling soil samples is strongly preferred
Familiarity with soil preparation techniques (drying, sieving, grinding) is an advantage
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow protocols precisely
High level of organization and ability to manage large numbers of samples
Strong data entry accuracy and ability to manage structured datasets
Comfortable using spreadsheets and digital data systems
Ability to identify and resolve inconsistencies in sample labeling or records
Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
Based in or willing to relocate to Gulu
Able to work full-time in a laboratory setting
Willing to perform repetitive tasks with consistency and precision
