The requirements
Qualifications and Experience:
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Education (Early Childhood, Primary or Kiswahili specialization) from a recognized institution.
- Registered teacher with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
- Minimum of 3 years’ teaching experience, preferably in an Early Years or lower primary setting.
- Proven ability to teach Kiswahili as a language of instruction and communication for young learners.
- Experience designing and implementing child-centered, activity-based language programs.
- Native or near-native fluency in Kiswahili with strong understanding of early years language acquisition.
- Demonstrated expertise in early literacy development strategies.
- Strong skills in curriculum planning, creative lesson delivery and age-appropriate pedagogy.
- Ability to integrate cultural elements such as songs and storytelling into lessons.
- Strong assessment, feedback and reporting skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to a high-performance school culture.
- Commitment to safeguarding, inclusivity, professionalism and continuous professional growth.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement the Kiswahili curriculum that promotes language fluency, literacy and cultural understanding.
- Prepare age-appropriate lesson plans, teaching aids and instructional materials for early learners.
- Deliver engaging Kiswahili lessons incorporating songs, storytelling and interactive activities.
- Provide individualized language support to non-native speakers to enhance participation and comprehension.
- Integrate Kiswahili learning into cross-disciplinary activities and daily school routines.
- Prepare, administer and assess assignments and evaluations to monitor learner progress.
- Use formative and summative assessments to guide instructional improvement.
- Collaborate with colleagues to strengthen Kiswahili instruction and optimize learning resources.
- Participate in school-wide literacy and language initiatives.
- Engage learners in cultural and co-curricular activities such as poetry, music and storytelling, including participation in events like the Kenya Music Festival (KMF).
- Support library use and assist learners in accessing appropriate books and learning resources.
- Maintain accurate student records and prepare termly progress reports.
- Communicate regularly with parents regarding learner development and progress.
- Participate actively in staff meetings, collaborative planning and professional development sessions.
