Description

Active in trade since 2019, the team brings together a mix of regional and global projects, currently delivered by a team of advisors based in Nairobi and Mombasa with a combined portfolio growing from around EUR 7 million towards EUR 12 million. The work spans the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), digital and e-commerce trade, product quality and standards, trade facilitation, green customs, corridor and infrastructure development, and the
reduction of inequalities, with gender, greening and inequality as cross-cutting themes across the portfolio.


The Portfolio at a Glance

  • AfCFTA Support Programme – Kenya – “From Kenya to the world through the continent”: helping Kenyan firms and government use the AfCFTA through policy
    support, harmonised rules and capacity building (partners include MITI – State
    Department for Trade, KAM and KRA).

  • Pan-African e-Commerce Initiative (PeCI) – “Boosting digital trade”: improving the conditions for companies to participate in cross-border e-commerce across the e-commerce ecosystem.

  • Alliance for Product Quality (AfPQ) – “Promoting quality, promoting trade”: improving product quality and competitiveness in export sectors across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.

  • Partnerships for Sustainable Trade (P4ST) / Green Customs – “Faster, safer and
    greener trade”: safe and efficient trade in environmentally sensitive commodities, with KRA, KESRA and FEAFFA.

  • Northern Corridor Project (PGII) – accelerating growth and connectivity on the Northern Corridor, including the Lake Victoria safe navigation and multimodal connectivity work, with the NCTTCA Secretariat and member states.

  • Reducing Inequalities / Sector Programme 2030 Agenda – “Towards a more equal Kenya”: working with the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) and partners on the Kenya Action Plan on Inequality.

  • Green Trade for Sustainable Development – a new initiative focused on sustainable,
    green value chains and EU/global market access.


Responsibilities

Purpose of the Position

The team is looking for a motivated recent graduate to join as an Intern providing cross-cutting support across communications, events and coordination, and administration and knowledge
management. The team regularly produces presentations, briefings and public-relations Material, and hosts workshops, retreats, partner missions and stakeholder engagements across its projects. The intern will help the team tell its story clearly, run well-organized events, and keep its documents and knowledge well managed.

This is a hands-on learning role: the intern will gain practical exposure to international development cooperation, trade policy and the day-to-day work of a busy, multi-project team, while contributing directly to the visibility and smooth running of the portfolio.


Key Responsibilities

Communications and Public Relations

  • Support the development and production of presentations, briefing notes, fact sheets,
    newsletters and other project communication materials.

  • Assist in drafting, formatting and proofreading content for internal and external audiences, ensuring alignment with GIZ branding and corporate design guidelines.

  • Help create and curate content for social media and other channels, including writing short posts and preparing visuals.

  • Support documentation of project activities and events through photography coordination, write-ups, success stories and short reports.

  • Help maintain and organise the team’s photo library, communications assets and
    presentation templates.

Events and Coordination

  • Provide logistical and organisational support for workshops, retreats, partner missions, launches and stakeholder meetings (e.g. with MITI, KAM, KRA, KESRA, NGEC and corridor partners).

  • Assist with preparing agendas, invitations, participant lists, name tags, materials
    and venue/travel arrangements.

  • Support on-the-day coordination of events, including registration, note-taking and
    capturing key outcomes.

  • Help compile event documentation, photographs and follow-up materials after
    activities.

Administration and Knowledge Management

  • Support the organization and upkeep of the team’s shared folders, files and document
    structures so that information is easy to find and well version-controlled.

  • Help draft and format meeting minutes, action points and internal reports.

  • Support the maintenance of stakeholder maps, contact lists and partner databases across
    the projects.

  • Assist with general administrative tasks that keep the multi-project team running
    smoothly.

  • Contribute to capturing and consolidating lessons learned and good practices across the
    portfolio.


Qualifications and Requirements

Essential

  • A recent Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, international relations, development studies, economics, trade, business administration or a related field.

  • Excellent written and spoken English, with strong writing, editing and proofreading
    skills.

  • Strong command of Microsoft Office, in particular PowerPoint and Word, and comfort
    with digital file/folder organization.

  • Good organisational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • A proactive, reliable and collaborative attitude, and willingness to learn in a fast-paced team environment.

  • Sense of urgency: Anticipate and quickly respond to the needs of internal and
    external stakeholders.

Desirable

  • Interest in or exposure to trade, economic development, regional integration (AfCFTA,
    EAC) or international cooperation.

  • Experience with graphic design or content tools (e.g. Canva, Adobe Suite) and basic social media management.

  • Experience supporting events, workshops or communications activities, e.g. through
    previous internships or student work.

  • Knowledge of Kiswahili is an added advantage.

  • Thoughtful risk-taking: Challenge the status quo and push boundaries to achieve greater
    impact.

  • Empowerment and accountability: Empower yourself and otherst o act and hold each other accountable for results.
