Description

Organizational Setting and Reporting

  • Organization & Location: United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), Division of Administrative Services, Design and Construction Section (Nairobi, Kenya).
  • Project Context: UNON Conference Facilities Project (CFP).
  • Reporting Line: Reports to the Chief, Design and Construction Section.
  • Core Role Overview: Provides technical expertise, analysis, and oversight on the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of major electrical systems and building automation infrastructure (e.g., power substations, voltage networks, lighting, and Building Management Systems).

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and advise on the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of major electrical systems and building automation facilities (power distribution networks, lighting, BMS, emergency power, and related infrastructure).
  • Evaluate, review, and revise project documents and design specifications for accuracy, technical soundness, feasibility, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Review and submit technical design drawings, specifications, owner's reports, monthly invoices, cost breakdowns, general condition estimates, and labor reports for Section Chief approval.
  • Review and approve weekly and monthly progress reports submitted by project design consultants and contractors.
  • Recommend effective technical solutions for unusual or complex engineering problems.
  • Conduct engineering studies to develop technical guidelines for planning and facility maintenance programs.
  • Provide technical input on design issues, accounting for power load estimates, electrical safety, energy efficiency, BMS integration, environmental factors, and material selections.
  • Stay current with industry trends, technical engineering literature, and advancements in equipment and methods.
  • Lead project teams in analyzing and resolving critical design or construction challenges in specialized areas.
  • Serve as a technical adviser on planning missions, committees, and international meetings.
  • Perform additional related duties as required to support project goals.

Education

  • Required: Advanced university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Alternative: A first-level university degree (Bachelor's) combined with two (2) additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.
  • Desirable: Completion of degree or non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics, or data science.

Work Experience

  • Required: Minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in electrical engineering or a related field involving large-scale construction or renovation projects.
  • Note: Applicants must explicitly detail project name, type, scale, duration, job title, and specific responsibilities showing how they meet this requirement.
  • Desirable:
  • Experience in both construction management and design within electrical engineering for large-scale building construction projects.
  • Design review or construction management experience with Building Management Systems (BMS).
  • Design review or construction management experience with solar PV power generation and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

Languages

  • Required: Fluency in English (English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat).
