Description
The “Project „Climate-resilient Agriculture and Pastoralism in Northern Kenya” is a new project starting its operation in March 2026.
The project supports rural communities as well as local public, private and civil society stakeholders in their efforts to increase the resilience of the rural population regarding climate and socio-economic challenges. Sustainable and productive management of natural resources and climate resilient income generation from livestock, agriculture and fisheries are main intervention areas. While for Turkana and Marsabit there will be a o the focus will be on the better management of the Lake Baringo catchment area. The project will be implemented in the counties of Turkana, Marsabit and Baringo.
To make the project a success GIZ is looking for a highly motivated team to support the
various interventions.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities:
The technical Adviser is responsible for the operational management of the following project measures and activities, in particular focusing on the projects overall Output 1: “Improve the capacities of community and user-based organizations for conflict-sensitive management of natural resources”.
Support the setup of project structures and establish networks with partners from local government, community organizations, civil society, private sector and other development partners in Turkana and contribute to the overall conceptionalization of the project.
Oversee planning and implementation of the project activities under the assigned project output, with a view to create synergies within and beyond Turkana/in the ASALs and with other players.
Facilitate inclusive land-use and resource management agreements among different with a focus on rangelands, but also water resources.
Initiate capacity building measures for community actors and relevant stakeholders (e.g. stakeholder workshops, trainings and capacity building measures).
Facilitate conflict mediation measures on community level in case of need.
Elaborate work packages (incl. administrative and financial requirements) which can be taken over by consultants or local partners (e.g Local Subsidies) and oversee and monitor the implementation and impact of the same.
Support monitoring and evaluation of project activities, document impact, elaborate knowledge and communication products and contribute to visibility of the project.
Contribute to the mainstreaming of cross-cutting and overarching issues into project implementation and Cluster development, e.g. gender and youth, digital transformation.
Where appropriate and reasonable, the position holder is willing to perform tasks outside the scope of the job description as required by the AV of the project or the Cluster coordinator Agriculture and Rural Development and contribute to the overall portfolio development of the Cluster
Qualifications & Specialist Knowledge:
Relevant Master’s degree in agriculture, livestock natural resource management or
related technical fields.Minimum of 10 years professional working experience in the field of rangeland management and natural resource management with community-level organizations
and government.Prior working experience with an international development partner and/ or known civil
society player and a minimum of 3 years working experience in a duty station outside Nairobi, preferably a northern ASAL area.Strong managerial and organizational skills with ability to execute complex tasks
under time pressure within required schedules and timelines.Excellent communication and negotiation skills and proven capacity to interact and mediate among different stakeholders.
Excellent team player with strong interpersonal skills, high self-determination and ability
to acquire new knowledge independently.Fluency in spoken and written English and Swahili with ability to produce high-standard documents (English) as well as very good working knowledge of ICT and computer applications (e.g. MS Office, MS Teams). Local languages are an added advantage.
