Description
Key Responsibilities;
Debt Recovery Strategy & Portfolio Management;
- Develop and implement effective debt recovery strategies for non-performing assets (NPAs) across all customer segments.
- Lead the recovery, restructuring, rehabilitation, and resolution of distressed credit facilities to maximize recoveries and minimize losses.
- Oversee enforcement actions, debt restructures, loan workouts, foreclosures, receiverships, asset disposals, and other recovery initiatives.
- Monitor the performance of the NPA portfolio and recommend corrective actions to arrest adverse portfolio trends.
- Conduct regular reviews of delinquent and classified accounts and provide recommendations for recovery actions.
Credit Risk Management & Provisioning;
- Review and assess impairment provisions for NPA accounts in compliance with CBK Prudential Guidelines, IFRS, and the Bank's internal policies.
- Evaluate provisioning requirements, write-off recommendations, and recovery estimates for impaired facilities.
- Ensure accurate loan classification, provisioning, and reporting of the Bank's credit portfolio.
- Perform detailed financial and cash flow analyses of distressed borrowers and provide recommendations to Credit Risk Management Committee (CRMC) and Board Credit Committee (BCC).
- Support budget preparation and forecasting related to loan loss provisions and recoveries.
Governance, Compliance & Controls;
- Review and enhance Debt Recovery policies, procedures, and frameworks to align with regulatory and business requirements.
- Ensure compliance with directives issued by the Board, BCC, CRMC, CBK, and other regulatory bodies.
- Drive strong risk management practices within the Debt Recovery Unit, including Risk Control Self-Assessments (RCSA).
- Ensure timely, accurate, and complete submission of management and regulatory reports.
- Coordinate responses to internal, external, and regulatory audits and ensure implementation of agreed corrective actions.
Stakeholder Management & Relationship Engagement;
- Engage with customers, legal representatives, administrators, receivers, liquidators, and other stakeholders to negotiate and execute recovery solutions.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal departments including Credit, Legal, Finance, Operations, and Business Units.
- Conduct customer meetings and site visits to assess recovery prospects and monitor borrower operations where necessary.
- Represent the Bank in legal proceedings and provide witness testimony when required.
- Prepare and provide responses to administrators, insolvency practitioners, regulators, and other third parties.
Third-Party Service Provider Management;
- Evaluate, recommend, and manage the Bank's panel of recovery service providers, including auctioneers, debt collectors, investigators, valuers, and law firms.
- Coordinate service provider empanelment processes and obtain necessary regulatory approvals where applicable.
- Monitor service provider performance against agreed Service Level Agreements (SLAs), turnaround times, and quality standards.
- Ensure optimal utilization of external recovery resources to maximize recoveries while managing costs.
Reporting & Committee Support;
- Prepare and present recovery portfolio reports to management committees, including BCC, CRMC, and other governance forums.
- Provide insights on portfolio performance, recovery trends, provisioning, write-offs, and significant recovery initiatives.
- Escalate emerging risks and recovery challenges and recommend mitigating actions.
- Track, monitor, and report progress against recovery targets, KPIs, and departmental objectives.
Leadership & Continuous Improvement;
- Provide leadership, guidance, and technical expertise to the Debt Recovery team.
- Promote a high-performance culture focused on recovery effectiveness, compliance, and customer outcomes.
- Identify and implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and recovery performance.
- Contribute to the development of departmental strategies, initiatives, and recovery frameworks that support the Bank's overall objectives.
Academic & Professional Qualifications;
- Bachelor’s Degree in a Social Science or related field
- Relevant professional qualification; e.g Certified Credit Professional, Certified Public Accountant or Association of Chartered Certified Accountants
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 9–12 years' experience in Banking, Credit Risk, Debt Recovery, Remedial Management, Corporate Banking, or Special Assets Management.
- At least 5 years' experience in a management or supervisory role within Debt Recovery, Credit Risk, Special Assets, or Remedial Management.
- Demonstrated experience managing:
- Non-Performing Assets (NPA) portfolios.
- Loan restructuring and rehabilitation.
- Insolvency, receivership, administration, and liquidation processes.
- Legal recoveries and collateral realization.
- Credit provisioning and impairment assessment under IFRS 9.
- Non-Performing Assets (NPA) portfolios.
- Experience presenting papers and recommendations to Board Credit Committees, Credit Risk Management Committees, or senior management forums.
