GIZ has been working in Kenya on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 1975 and up to now implements programs in a wide variety of areas, including economic development, green energy, governance, food security, and peace and security. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) is our main commissioning party, but we also work closely with the private sector, fostering successful interaction between development policy and foreign trade. In the framework of the German Development Cooperation (GDC), GIZ cooperates closely with the German Development Bank, Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau, KfW, and other agencies.

GIZ supports capacity development for individuals, organisations and institutions, to enable the people to improve their lives through their own efforts. We have developed guidelines for pro poor development and carry out our projects in close cooperation with civil society on the basis of intergovernmental negotiations.

Responsibilities

The position holder will be responsible for;

  • Cooperation with the corporate communications office in Germany and with projects in Kenya and Somalia

  • Media liaison and public relations activities

  • Responsible for the GIZ Kenya/Somalia corporate image

Tasks

Under the supervision of the Senior Portfolio Manager Kenya GIZ-Office Nairobi the Communications Focal point is responsible for Communications in the GIZ Office

  • Acting as the contact person for corporate communications office for Kenya and Somalia
  • Regular advisories on corporate design to projects and programmes
  • Managing social media pages for GIZ Kenya- LinkedIn Page, Twitter (Country Director’s page) and GIZ Kenya YouTube page
  • Organizing trainings tailored for communicators in GIZ Kenya/Somalia
  • Coordinating quarterly communicators meetings and minuting and actualizing the resolutions from the meetings
  • Updating the Communication Strategy for GIZ Kenya/Somalia on need basis
  • Facilitating exchange and peer learning between cluster / project communicators on IDA platform and on MS Teams
  • Spearheading the development of joint communication materials in liaison with project communicators
  • Production of GIZ Kenya/Somalia newsletters (5 issues a year)
  • Managing media liaison and public relations activities of GIZ Kenya/Somalia projects
  • Assisting in the constant design of GIZ Kenya/Somalia country page on IDA and updating the news section with country relevant information, as well as scheduling events
  • Using innovative ways to communicate the impact of GIZ Kenya and Somalia projects

Required qualifications, competences and experience

Qualifications

  • BA/MA in communications or comparable qualification
  • Basic knowledge of development policy issues, GIZ work and its position within German and international development cooperation structures, and the ability to successfully navigate a politically sensitive environment
  • Fluency in English
  • German Language knowledge will be an added advantage

Professional experience

  • At least 1-3 years professional experience in a comparable position

Other knowledge, additional competences

  • Excellent communication skills; target-oriented journalistic writing skills

  • Good working knowledge of ITC technologies and social media

  • Project management

  • Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed – corresponding measures are agreed with management.

Assignment period:

Until 31.12.2023 with a possibility of renewal
