Experience and Knowledge Required
- A minimum of 2 years post admission working experience within the Insurance sector.
- An eye for detail, strong organizational skills and able to take responsibility for own workload.
- Demonstrated integrity and professional competence as reflected in work performance and results.
- Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
- Must be a team player.
Academic and Professional Qualifications required
- Bachelor of Laws Degree from a recognized institution.
- Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
- An Advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a valid Practicing Certificate.
- A registered member of the Law Society of Kenya in good standing.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring that files are properly documented.
- Communication with insureds to get relevant claim documentation and giving guidance on Court attendance.
- Appointment of advocates, via both soft copy and hard copy correspondences, to handle company matters within three (days) of receipt of summons and maintenance of a register for such appointments.
- Liaising with external advocates and insureds two (2) weeks prior to the court date to ensure that witnesses are availed during hearings and proper witness statements and documentation availed to external advocates at the point of filing defences.
- Giving well researched opinions on the likely outcome of matters in court and on settlement parameters in case of negotiations.
- Reviewing ongoing cases and advising the Legal Manager accordingly.
- Assisting in maintenance of documentation and legal databases.
- Ensuring that judgements are processed within five (5) days of receipt, authorized and forwarded to Finance Department. Following up on the payments to avoid executions for which you will be held liable.
- Ensuring appeal instructions are given ten (10) days before the lapse date and appeal deposits are dispatched seven (7) days before the due date.
- Ensuring that no costs attributed to execution proceedings due to delayed processing of judgements are incurred by the Company.
- Regular bring ups on all matters in Court to ensure they are updated.
- Giving Management opinions on changes in the law that would affect the Company.
- Attending Court as a witness for the Company.
- Perusing Court files to establish the position of litigation.
- Ensuring that emails are responded to/actioned upon within twenty-four (24) hours.
- Ensuring that insureds are notified of their liability in relation to judgement amounts that are beyond their policy limits within five (5) days of receipt of a judgement and following up on a formal acknowledgement from the insured.
- Carrying out a detailed handover of matters being handled before proceeding on leave.
- Submitting a monthly report on the status of the matters allocated to you.
- Any other duties assigned to you by the Legal Manager that are pertinent to the Legal Department.
