Description
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a global service provider in the field of international cooperation for sustainable development dedicated to shaping a future worth living around the world. As a public-benefit federal enterprise, GIZ supports the German Government – in particular the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and many public and private sector clients in achieving their objectives in international cooperation in around 120 countries.
One of the projects currently implemented by GIZ in Kenya is Programme for Promotion of Self Employment and Entrepreneurship II. This project is implemented in close collaboration with
the Kenyan State Department for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises Development and its agencies. The project aims to improve framework conditions for sustainable business development of MSMEs in Kenya.
Three outputs have been defined for the project namely (1) Supporting the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSME Development and their agencies with trainings to improve support and promotion of MSMEs (2) Developing the skills of state agencies as well as private business development service providers in offering training, matching, and coaching services to increase the business skills within MSMEs (3) Enabling MSMEs in essential oils and leather value chains to achieve quality improvement in their production and integrating them into national and international supply chains.
The project is recruiting an intern to support monitoring and evaluation activities aligned to output 2. The intern will gain practical experience in monitoring development cooperation projects, exposure to MSME ecosystem development in Kenya, skills in data analysis and reporting, experience in field-based data collection and understanding of results-based management in development cooperation.
Responsibilities
A. Responsibilities
Support implementation of the project’s monitoring & evaluation (M&E) framework.
Assist in tracking and reporting performance indicators for MSME accelerator programmes.
Contribute to data management, analysis, and reporting processes.
Support documentation of results, lessons learned, and success stories.
Participate in monitoring field activities.
B. Tasks
A. Assist to coordinate & oversee project monitoring & evaluation activities
Support Project data collection, cleaning, validating data using Kobo Toolbox and coordinating with the Technical Advisor to ensure high-quality data is gathered and effectively utilized for adaptive management.
B. Maintain and regularly update project M&E dashboards using Power BI and indicator tracking tool.
Follow through and track data collection schedules as per the project calendar of events.
Collaborate with the partner organization in M&E activities, ensuring they effectively adopt and integrate the project M&E system.
C. Reporting & Documentation
Compile data summaries and performance tables.
Document, store and share case studies, beneficiary success stories, and lessons learned.
Maintain proper storage of data and information and carry out regular back-ups.
Update and maintain the Project Knowledge Management Library in Teams/SharePoint.
D. Field Monitoring Support
Participate in regular field monitoring visits to MSMEs and partner organizations.
Assist in conducting data quality assurance, beneficiary verification and spot checks.
E. Evaluation, Learning and Impact communication
Assist in project data analysis, interpretation and reporting for internal use to identify trends and insights.
Contribute to internal reflection meetings and learning sessions.
Support in organizing project review meetings
Participate in relevant forums.
Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor from time to time.
C. Required qualifications, competences and experience
The intern should have the following academic qualifications, competences and experience.
Bachelor’s degree in: Monitoring & Evaluation, Statistics, Development Studies or related fields.
Basic understanding of M&E concepts (logframes, KPIs, Theory of Change)
Proficiency in Kobo Toolbox, ODK or Power BI
Basic data analysis and reporting skills
Ability to perform a variety of conceptual analysis required for the formulation, administration and evaluation.
Strong analytical and organizational skill
Collaboration and Communication: Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collectively in a multicultural environment.
Attention to detail
Good report writing skills
Ability to work independently and in team
