A.   

Background


GIZ has been working in Kenya on behalf of the GermanFederal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) since 1975 and

up to now implements programs in a wide variety of areas, including economicdevelopment, green energy, governance, food security, and peace and security.



The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) isour main commissioning party, but we also work closely with the private sector,

fostering successful interaction between development policy and foreign trade.In the framework of the German Development Cooperation (GDC), GIZ cooperatesclosely with the German Development Bank, Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau, KfW,and other agencies.

 


GIZ supports capacity development for individuals, organisationsand institutions, to enable the people to improve their lives through their own

efforts. We have developed guidelines for pro poor development and carry outour projects in close cooperation with civil society on the basis ofintergovernmental negotiations.


Responsibilities

A.   

Responsibilities


The Junior Accounting Specialistis responsible for:


 

  • Ensuring that the service in the department is provided correctly and in accordance with GIZ
  • financial management and accounting procedures

 

B.   

Tasks

The Junior Accounting Specialistwill perform the following tasks:


 

Responsible for Cash Officeoperations:


 

  • Facilitation of payments without delay for approved and properly prepared vouchers, coding,
  • relevant and adequate support documents

  • Reconciliations of physical and cash book balances according to the GIZ cash management rules and
  • report i.e. when there is surplus or deficit.
  • Ensure no new advances to persons with outstanding advances

  • Follow up on accounts receivables and payables for designated Projects

  • Ensure constant updating and adherence to cash agreements

  • First level receiving and checking invoices and other claims for processing.

  •  

     

     

     

    Event Facilitation

     

    • Regular communication with projects on events preparation, implementation and settlement

  • Bank agent to facilitate EAC payments and disbursement of DSA to participants

  • Submission of accounting documents and settlement to finance unit at country office

  • Liaising with country office procurement department for venue bookings and settlement of final
  • invoices.
  • Process request for funds to cater for per diems and other reimbursements

  • Follow-up on VAT claims with the responsible unit at country office

  •  

    Additional Tasks

     

    • Ensure regular timely follow up of project receivablesand payables and documents this process.


  • Ensure all financial reposting are done in time, signed,submitted to the respective units and properly filled.


  • Liaise with external auditors, partner and projects oncommercial suitability check


  • Follow-up with country office procurement team ondrafting of local subsidy and financing agreement contracts


  • Follow-up and support partners on accountability/list ofexpenditures and ensure they’re booked to cost timely


  • Any other duties as assigned from time to time by thesupervisor

    C.   

    Profile


    The Junior Accounting Specialist should have the followingqualifications, competences and experiences;



    Qualifications


    • First degree in Accounting, Finance, Business administration or related field.

  • Professional qualification in accounting, at least CPA II or equivalent

  •  

    Professional experience


    • At least two years of professional working experience in a similar position

     

     

    Other knowledge, additional competence

    • Knowledge of GIZ instruments and procedures will be an added advantage

  • Good interpersonal communication skills

  • Good working knowledge of ITC technologies (related software, phone, fax, e-mail, the internet) and
  • computer applications (e.g. MS Office)
  • Good English command. German knowledge is an added advantage

  • Willingness to upskill as required by the tasks to be performed

  •  

     

    D.   

    Duration of Assignment

    This position involves frequentlocal travel and will be tenable until December 2024, with prospects of

    extension should the status quo remain.

     

      

    E.   

    Duty location

    The duty location is Nairobi.
