Description
Countries in the Horn of Africa region are origin, transit and destination countries for people who have left their homes. According to United Nations figures, there are some 5.4 million migrants in the region. The number of refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people has risen to around 20 million.
A large proportion remains in the region. Many travel irregularly, without a visa or valid papers – often out of necessity – and turn to people smugglers or risk becoming victims of human trafficking.
Programme goal:
Migration in the Horn of Africa is safer and more orderly, relevant actors are better able to take action against human trafficking, and migrants and victims of human trafficking benefit from improved protection services and economic prospects.
How we work:
The project has two components:
1) Promoting institutions: It organizes training courses for state and civil actors such as police authorities and human rights officers. The project trains them to better identify and prosecute human trafficking and smuggling and to refer victims to social services.
2) Protecting migrants and victims of human trafficking: It strengthens civil society organizations that provide protection and support services such as accommodation, health care and legal advice and promotes future prospects for human trafficking victims and migrants.
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is coordinating the implementation of the project, which is being carried out jointly with CIVIPOL, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
