Background
Deutsche Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), on behalf of the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is implementing a global programme “Soil Protection and Rehabilitation for Food Security” in seven countries, Kenya being one of them. In Western Kenya, the project “Soil Protection and Rehabilitation of Degraded Soils in Western Kenya’’ (ProSoil) aims to facilitate the adoption of soil protection and rehabilitation measures at scale. It does so by a) capacity building and training, b) improving the regulatory framework for soil management and c) identification and documentation of learnings from project implementation.
The project is addressing the underlying soil health issues through a comprehensive approach that promotes several measures including Conservation Agriculture, Integrated Soil Fertility and Pest Management, Agroforestry and Soil Erosion Control Measures. This approach is informed by partnerships with both national and international research organizations through collaborative research.
