Description

The “Project „Climate-resilient Agriculture and Pastoralism in Northern Kenya” is a new project starting its operation in March 2026.

The project supports rural communities as well as local public, private and civil society stakeholders in their efforts to increase the resilience of the rural population regarding climate and
socio-economic challenges. Sustainable and productive management of natural resources and climate resilient income generation from livestock, agriculture and fisheries are main intervention areas. While for Turkana and Marsabit the focus will be on the better management of the Lake Baringo catchment area. The project will be implemented in the counties of Turkana, Marsabit and Baringo.

To make the project a success GIZ is looking for a highly motivated team to support the various interventions.


Responsibilities

The technical Adviser is responsible for the operational management of the following project measures and activities, in particular focusing on Output 3: “Improved capacities of community-based organizations to manage natural resources in Baringo” with the following sub activities

(1) Strengthening of community based organizations.

(2) Rehabilitation of degraded areas and (Promotion of Soil and water conservation measures, environmentally friendly production practices, climate smart agriculture and agro-forestry

Related tasks are:

  • Support the CLAP AV and project team to set up initial project structures, establish networks and trustworthy working relations with partners from local government, civil society, private sector and other development partners present in Baringo County as well as with the partner project team from AICS to position the project.

  • Contribute to the conceptualization of the project activities in Baringo County and identify relevant local partners who can collaborate in implementation of field activities

  • Oversee planning and implementation of the project activities under the assigned project output, with a view to create synergies within the project in and beyond Baringo, but also among the
    different interventions in Baringo by other players

  • Initiate and facilitate capacity building measures for the target group or local partners (e.g. community workshops and/or trainings, capacity building measures for partners or multipliers,
    stakeholder workshops)

  • Elaborate work packages (incl. administrative and financial requirements) which can be taken over by consultants or local partners (e.g in form of Local Subsidies) and oversee and monitor the implementation and impact of the same

  • Initiate and perform administrative task as per GIZ rules and regulation and as required for the implementation of the assigned task (e.g. procurement of goods and services, compliance with GIZ security standards).

  • Support monitoring and evaluation of project activities, document impact, elaborate knowledge and communication products and contribute to visibility of the project

  • Contribute to the mainstreaming of cross-cutting and overarching issues into project planning and implementation and Cluster development, e.g. gender and youth, digital transformation.

Where appropriate and reasonable, the position holder is willing to perform tasks outside the scope of the job description as required by the AV of the project or the Cluster coordinator Agriculture and Rural Development and contribute to the overall portfolio development of the Cluster

Qualifications & Specialist Knowledge

  • Relevant master’s degree in integrated Watershed Management or a closely related technical field

  • Minimum of 8 years professional working experiences in the field of integrated watershed management and minimum of 5 year working experiences in a duty station outside Nairobi, preferably in a rural area or at least with a focus on working in rural areas

  • Previous working experience and knowledge of GIZ processes and systems is an important advantage.

  • Strong technical knowledge of climate-smart management practices (technologies or production practices) for integrated watershed management and agricultural production

  • Good Kenyan and preferably international network related to the field of work and overview on the ongoing national discussion on climate – resilient integrated watershed management

  • Strong communication and negotiation skills particularly in complex and political settings combined with strong oral and written coordination and communication skills to create and sustain linkages between different stakeholders

  • Proven experience in working with multiple and cross sectoral stakeholders (public, private, civil society and organizations, development partners) at different levels

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and spoken Swahili are required as well as very good working knowledge of ICT and computer applications (e.g. MS Office, MS Teams)
