What is the opportunity?

  • Reporting to the Regional Manager Turkana with guidance from the Lead Engineer. The Senior Technician is responsible for performing technical tasks within the Regional office following established standards and procedures.  The person in this position must be self-driven, a devoted Christian with a clear calling from God and a heartfelt passion for our mission. This position requires that the person resides in Kakuma Turkana, Kenya, where the office is located. It also involves frequent traveling to remote locations within Kenya or surrounding countries.
  • As an employee of Water Missions International Kenya, the Senior Technician is responsible for developing a biblical worldview culture that leads to God-honoring excellence in all their work and reinforcing the following: providing accurate data, empowering staff to have the skills and mindset needed to acknowledge mistakes or problems as opportunities to find appropriate solutions, and empowering staff to consistently work for excellence in solutions that are consistent with Water Mission’s mission, vision, values, and standards.

What is required? 

  • Alignment with Water Mission’s Statement of Faith and core values of Love, Excellence, and Integrity.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Swahili is required.
  • Diploma/Higher Diploma in Engineering (Building and Civil Engineering).
  • A valid NCA Site Supervisor license is required.
  • Experience of at least 7 years in a technical field (preferably related to Water Systems).
  • Specialized technical skills (such as masonry, civil works, building).
  • Driver’s license required.
  • Advanced skills with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and drafting programs (AutoCAD/PowerCADD, SolidWorks/ProE).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including cross-cultural communication and the ability to clearly articulate ideas and feedback constructively.
  • Excellent analytical, project planning, and management skills.
  • Thorough understanding of the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.
  • Consistent lifestyle and behavior that bears a good witness to the Christian faith.
  • A level of impeccable integrity and stewardship that demonstrates to those who invest in Water Mission Kenya a sense of security and trust that their gifts are well used and invested.
  • Demonstrated ability to build consensus and work collaboratively and effectively with other leaders, volunteers, and employees at all levels.
  • Must be standards and detail-oriented with the ability to plan ahead.
  • Qualified Turkana locals are encouraged to apply.
  • Willingness and availability to travel to remote places and occasional trips abroad.
  • Legal authorization to work in Kenya without sponsorship.

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain a strong Christian witness and model servant leadership to colleagues, partners, the communities we serve, and the public.
  • Engage and participate in prayer before and after team meetings.
  • Lead and participate in biblically based staff devotions.

Other Responsibilities

  • Supervise contractors, tradesmen, and general labor and oversee construction of perimeter fencing, tap stands, wash hand basins, valve boxes, digging and backfilling trenches for pipes, foundations, concrete, steel, and masonry structures for the project.
  • Preparing building sites.
  • Ordering and inspecting building materials.
  • Support engineers and technicians with different projects.
  • Carry out project implementation according to the design, schedule, and budget.
  • Provide timely project communication and implementation progress reports which include:
    • Taking photographs of all the project components at every stage.
    • Giving accurate reports on work progress.
  • Carry out accurate water Quality testing.
  • Overseeing transportation of materials and equipment by:
  • Assisting in loading and transportation of Inventory equipment in a safe manner
  • Coordinating Transporting of hardware construction materials
  • Coordinate delivery of materials from suppliers as per the WMK BOQ’s, project design, layout, and Engineering recommendations
  • Follow store control guidelines when picking anything from the store.
  • Proper use and maintenance of the laboratory and laboratory equipment and apparatus.
  • Proper use and maintenance of tools, vehicles, and other WM equipment. For the vehicles, the logbook must be filled daily and stating clearly reasons for the journey.
  • Site demobilization. This includes the removal of rubbish, equipment, excess materials, temporary structures, and other unacceptable items on site. All rubbish must be disposed of properly and equipment and unused items to be returned to the office.
  • Prompt and accurate providing of receipts and cash advance requests.
  • Prompt and accurate providing of time sheets.
  • Abide by the policies/requirements of the WM Code of Conduct and Staff Policy Manual.
  • Other duties as assigned.
