Kijani Forestry is building a large-scale soil organic carbon (SOC) monitoring program across thousands of smallholder farms. We are hiring Soil Field Technicians to support soil sampling, data collection, and broader soil-related field activities that underpin this work.
This is a field-first role. You will spend most of your time traveling between farms, working directly with farmers, and collecting high-quality data that supports carbon measurement and improved land management.
Responsibilities
Conduct soil sampling across smallholder farms following established protocols, including sampling at multiple depths and locations within each field
Support a broader range of soil-related data collection activities, including soil characterization, land use documentation, and field condition assessments
Assist with ongoing soil monitoring activities, including repeat measurements and long-term plot tracking
Record GPS coordinates, field observations, and survey data using mobile data collection tools
Capture qualitative observations on soil type, vegetation, land management practices, and environmental conditions
Handle, label, store, and transport soil samples in accordance with project protocols
Support basic soil preparation processes such as drying, sieving, and organizing samples for laboratory analysis
Assist in field trials, pilot studies, and other soil or land management initiatives as required
Coordinate with farmers to access fields and clearly communicate the purpose of field activities
Provide feedback from fieldwork to support continuous improvement of protocols and data quality
Travel extensively across rural areas, primarily by boda boda, to reach sampling locations
Diploma or degree in agronomy, agriculture, soil science, environmental science, or a related field
Demonstrated experience in agricultural fieldwork or soil sampling
Ability to identify different soil types and assess field conditions
Experience working with smallholder farmers is preferred
Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standardized protocols accurately
Good organizational skills for managing samples and field data
Comfortable using smartphones and digital tools for data collection
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work independently in remote field conditions
Must be able to ride a moto Bike confidently
Fluency in English and Acholi
Willingness to work long hours in remote field locations
Physically fit and able to perform manual fieldwork
